So we are heartbroken to hear that our fellow garment workers in Los Angeles continue to be exploited during this coronavirus pandemic.
Our friends at The Garment Worker’s Center are fighting to protect factory workers by calling for access to hand washing, sanitized work stations, and social distancing implementation. Factories are neglecting the basic needs of these workers, even as they sew the masks and PPE that we rely on to protect us from Covid-19.
We also want to raise awareness for SB 1399, a new bill which would require that all 45,000+ garment workers in California be paid an hourly minimum wage. This is important because under the current state law, workers are paid per piece and not hourly. This results in the average California garment worker making around $50/day working 10-12 hour days. The new law would also expand liability for unsafe working conditions and wage theft.
